It's Winter (but not really in Alabama!)

It's winter time! Well, like my title says, not really where we live in Alabama but at least it is in the Alligator room! The craziness of living in the South - 60-70 degree Winter days! We spend January in our class learning about Winter, Seasonal Clothing, Snowman, Penguins, Bears & Hibernation and Emotions & Manners. I am bringing you three different crafts we have done in this post!

I decided it would be fun to practice spelling our names and recognizing the letters by building a snowman with our names. My aide and I each sat with a child and let them tell us the letters to spell their names. Our kids are all 3 now so we are working very hard on this!

Seasonal Clothing is not always the easiest craft idea. So I thought it would be more fun to paint plates skin color and then add eyes, construction paper hair and ear muffs. For fun, they stamped a snowflake and sprinkled iridescent glitter onto a tongue like they were catching snowflakes!

The kids loved this craft as they got to eat a sweet treat once they were finished. I created a dotted line snowman on my computer and then we cut them out and glued them on light blue paper. We helped outline the circles with glue and the kids got a container of marshmallows to create their snowman and trace along the dotted lines. Of course, once done, they got to eat their leftover marshmallows.

Candy Cane Cradle

Oh, I love this craft! I do this one every single year and it never gets old!! If you don't remember, I teach at a preschool in one of our local churches so crafts geared towards Bible lessons is super encouraged!

This craft incorporates not only the meaning of Christmas but our alphabet by using the letter "J." We always read a book about the Legend of the Candy Cane. Then I show the kids how the candy cane turned around is the letter J.

Each child gets a cutout of the letter J/Candy Cane and we help them paint stripes red. After it dries, the children add a yellow star cutout to the top of the J and sprinkle it with gold glitter. Next, I laminate them for sturdiness and myself or my aide will hot glue on the moss and a plastic baby.

Christmas Angels

I usually go overboard on Christmas crafts each year and always make sure to do a fun Angel craft. I decided to switch it up this year and did a totally different one than I normally do. We cut out circles in skin tone paper for their faces. The kids got to choose from silver or gold heart shaped doilies for the Angel bodies. They glued the hearts upside down and then glued the head on. We made hand print Angel wings and added glitter for a glow! The kids completed it with a glitter halo, wiggle eyes and an Angelic smile!

Recipe of Me

We have so much fun with handprints. We actually did these back in October for our Parent Open House. We did our fun face handprints to look like each child and then they helped me thinks of things to make their recipe. We hung them out for the parents to see when they came to visit our room.

Hootie-Hoot

We spent some time studying Nocturnal animals this past Fall. Of course, one of our favorites was the owl. I found this precious owl idea and thought we had to try it! I cut out the owl patterns free hand along with the beak and feet. We let the kids choose their owl color and did handprint wings to match! They really enjoyed it and they turned out so cute! The center of the owl eyes are the kids fingerprints also.

Handprint Calendar

Wow... this was a project! I decided this past Summer, a handprint calendar would be the kids parent gifts for Christmas this year. So almost immediately when school started, I began doing handprints for them. I wanted to be able to give them an entire 2012 year calendar so we had 12 prints to do.

I searched the internet for poems and/or songs to go with each month as well. For the poem and handprint page, I did the poem on one column of the page and left the other side for the kids hands. Then I found a site to print monthly calendars with enough room to still write and attached all things to bright construction paper that would coordinate with the prints and the monthly theme! Hope you enjoy! Sorry for any shine to the pics - I took them after they were laminated!
